Music…the Resonance of the Soul

One change I made earlier this month was to purchase an iPod capable alarm clock so that I could stop waking to BRRR-BRRR-BRRR-BRRR and start waking to music that would inspire me to start my day. At first, I preselected the song to wake me — Nina Simone’s Feeling Good. Now I am simply allowing the iPod to randomly select my morning lullaby, and I am inadvertently surveying my life in the process.

This morning I awoke to Linkin Park’s Numb. Four years ago, I was in a very dark and angry place, and my favorite band was Linkin Park. The heavy metal shouting grinding shaking bass angry lyrics — spoke to the anger in my soul. My marriage was reaching a climax with constant conflict; and in retrospect, I see that the real me, without any masks, was trying to burst free of the prison I had created.

I’m tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
Don’t know what you’re expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)

[Chorus:]
I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I’m becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

While listening to that song can fill me with a sorrowful remembrance of my former life, of the struggle I endured, it also is a landmark that shows me with absolute clarity one truth: I am in a far different place now. The music I favor now is a resonance of my soul’s new happiness, peace, clarity, and freedom. Maybe I’ll set the clock to play Feeling Good tomorrow….

Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by you know how I feel

(refrain:)
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good

Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree you know how I feel

(refrain)

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don’t you know
Butterflies all havin’ fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
That’s what I mean

And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel

Take a look at the music that resonates with your soul in this moment…what does that tell you about your inner state?
